LOOR 2025 Coastal Personal Survival Training Requirements, Ontario Sailing Fall Course Offerings, and other Safety Items.

2025 will be the second season where there is a training requirement for LOOR OSR Category 3 races, the LO300, Susan Hood Trophy Race (SHTR), LOSHRS Race 4 (AKA 100 miler, Long Distance). While the course is not required for the LOSHRS day races, LOOR OSR Category 4, is highly recommended.

The LOOR training requirement for 2025 for OSR Category 3 races will stay at 15% of the total crew with the addition that the Person-in-Charge must meet the training requirements. The intent for 2026 is to raise to 30% of total crew, the number in the Sail Canada Prescription for OSR Category 3.

If you haven’t taken the course and will need it for either 2025 or 2026, there are still open seats in Ontario Sailing’s three fall one-day Coastal Personal Survival Courses. Details and registration are available at the link here: Ontario Sailing Courses

Ontario Sailing will be adding additional Coastal and Offshore Personal Survival Courses in the future. If you’re interested in the Offshore Personal Survival Course, please complete the Inquiry Form on the Ontario Sailing course registration web site as it helps them in meeting the demand and scheduling the courses.

To minimize your time and money spent, you need to consider your racing potential in the next five years to take the course that best suits your needs, see descriptions of the Sail Canada offering HERE.

LOOR recognizes and accepts the Offshore Personal Survival Course, as long as this is valid, for meeting the training requirements in the LOOR OSR Category 3.

If you believe you meet the training requirements with an equivalent or in the US, please reach out to LOOR by email for assistance at safety@loor..ca.

For information on offshore sailing in Canada such as stability and Offshore Special Regulations (OSR) with Sail Canada Prescriptions to them, see Sail Canada Offshore.

While the OSR 3 and 4 don’t require crew to have current first aid certifications, in 6.05, both call for:

At least two crewmembers shall be familiar with First Aid procedures, hypothermia, drowning, cardio-pulmonary resuscitation, and relevant communications systems.

The off-season is a good opportunity to refresh your knowledge of First Aid and obtain certification that might be required elsewhere, such as at work. After all, what’s taught has changed over time. Many decades ago, torniquets were in, then out for many decades, now back in! Many clubs offer First Aid Courses over the winter.
